Q:I’ve heard that many Japanese people go dining alone, or go to the movies alone. Do Japanese people like to do things by themselves?

Yes, in fact many people choose to do things alone. Me too, for instance, I like to go to see a movie by myself at the exact time when I feel I want to watch it. I might have never gone out and dined at the restaurant alone but…many times I have a solo lunch or go to a café by myself.

Depending on the country, sometimes people tend to assume that if you go see a movie alone it’s because you don’t have friends to go with, but I feel like in Japan not so many people think that way. Among my friendships as well, some think that “it’s better to go alone”.

You might have heard this, but solo karaoke is a thing too! Very popular. Of course, it’s fun to go together with friends, but when you are alone, you can let go and sing out loudly, don’t have to wait for your turn and can sing as much as you like the songs that you love: sounds like the perfect way to release the stress. I personally haven’t tried yet but, why not…? 🙂
